Obituary for Edith Richardson

from The Republican (Danville, Indiana)--issue of Thursday, May 7, 1903—page 1, column 4:

Little Life Crushed Out

Edith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marcus A. Richardson, formerly of Clayton, was struck by a train in Terre Haute on the afternoon of April 28 and received injuries from which she died April 30. The afternoon of the accident, Mrs. Richardson started to call upon a friend, taking with her her baby in a cart and Edith, age three and one-half, who was walking. In crossing the Vandalia tracks at Fifteenth street Edith was struck by an engine. The next afternoon she was removed to the hospital where an operation was performed to relieve the pressure of the fractured skull upon the brain. She lived but ten minutes after the operation. The parents have many friends in this county. Little Edith was a beautiful child, exceptionally bright and interesting. The funeral was Saturday. Rev. Sellers, who conducted the services, said but little of the tragic death, but he dwelt upon the pure, sweet, joyous life. Her last words to her father at leave-taking at the noon hour were: “Here is a kiss and love.” The casket was covered beneath a wreath of floral offerings and the pall bearers were four little girls dressed in white.
