ACCIDENT IS FATAL TO DAVID PHILLIPS, B. & O. ENGINE STRIKES AUTO--JASPER FISHER INJURED

David Phillips was fatally injured and Jasper Fisher sustained a crushed foot, Sunday morning when the automobile in which they were riding was struck by a light B. & O. engine at the crossing east of Maplewood. Mr. Fisher was taking two grand-children to Sunday school at Maplewood. The children were not hurt. Both of the men were taken immediately to the Methodist hospital in Indianapolis, where Mr. Phillips died in the late afternoon. The funeral was yesterday morning from the home of his son Rollie, at Jamestown, with burial at Brownsburg. Mr. Phillips was walking to Brownsburg when Mr. Fisher overtook him in his car and invited him to ride. The road runs west along the north side of the B. & O. track, finally crossing the track at an angle. Mr. Fisher turned upon the track to cross, just in time to be struck by the engine which he probably had not observed. Some years ago Mr. Fisher had lost a hand in an accident but he was counted a skilled driver for a man with one hand although he had had some accidents recently. He said he failed to hear any signal from the engineer. Mr. Phillips is survived by eight grown children; Rollie, Jamestown; Dudley, Brownsburg; Hubert and Mrs. Irwin Arnold, Clermont; Mrs.Forest Richwine, Brownsburg; Mrs. Clark Howell, Danville; Mrs. Chester Neal, Brownsburg; Miss Lou Phillips.
